New Westminster handles bulky items through a paid Special Pick Up Service, and it points residents to the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre in Coquitlam as an alternative. This guide summarizes what the City says on its pages, then covers when a bin is the better option. Our New Westminster page covers bin service in the city.
Cart placement
The City's garbage and recycling page says carts should be at the curb by 7 a.m. on collection day, and not left out overnight. It gives four steps. Place wheels against the curb, point the lid arrows toward the centre of the street, leave at least an arm's length from other objects and keep 3 metres of clearance overhead. Carts should be at least 1 metre from any wall or fence, and carts placed side by side or too close together may not be collected.
In bear areas near Hume Park, the City asks residents to secure garbage and green waste carts on their property until the morning of pickup, and to remove carts the same day.
Special Pick Up Service

For larger items that need disposal, the City may offer a special pick up where items are collected for a fee. You fill out a form, and staff respond with a quote and payment instructions. The City says special pick ups are scheduled on Thursdays, with none during weeks affected by a statutory holiday, and that no refunds are issued once payment is made. Items must be placed on City property, at the front or back curb.
The City's 2026 rates, in effect from January 1, 2026, are on its Special Pick Up Service page. The minimum fee covers one item, and additional mattresses, box springs and bulky items are charged separately. Check the page for the current figures.
What the City accepts
The City's accepted list includes household appliances such as stoves, dishwashers, washers, dryers, refrigerators and air conditioners, indoor furniture such as couches, chairs, desks, dressers and tables, plastic wrapped mattresses, box springs and bed frames, and outdoor items such as patio chairs, patio umbrellas and barbeques. It says the list is subject to change without notice.
What the City does not accept
The City's not accepted list includes tires, electronics such as computers and televisions, propane tanks, pianos, exercise equipment, bagged household waste and yard waste, construction and demolition waste such as lumber, drywall and concrete, and home renovation materials such as sinks, toilets, bathtubs, flooring, doors and windows. It also lists hazardous materials, including paints and solvents, oil and fuel, and asbestos.
The alternative: United Boulevard
The City says that, as an alternative, you can bring items to the United Boulevard Recycling and Waste Centre at 995 United Boulevard in Coquitlam, and that charges may apply. Check Metro Vancouver's page for that centre for current hours, accepted materials and fees. The City also reminds residents to bring proof of residency for green waste disposal.
Where a bin fits

The Special Pick Up Service covers furniture and appliances. It does not cover renovation waste, and a drop off run needs a vehicle and your time. A bin helps with:
- A cleanout of a house, basement or garage
- A renovation with a mix of materials
- A large number of items in a single go
Many people planning junk, cleanouts and renos begin with the 20-yard. Find the details on the 20-yard bin page. A 15-yard junk bin is at times available, but it is commonly sold out, so plan around the 20-yard. Other smaller sizes? Ask when you book. We deliver the bin, you load it, and Trash King hauls it away.
Your driveway or yard is private property, so a bin there takes no permit. If the bin has to sit on the street, boulevard or lane, check with the City first, since some cities need a permit. Strata or HOA rules may still apply on top of that. If yours does, the permit application goes to the City, and we time delivery to any permit dates.
Paint, propane, tires, fuel and electronics never go in a Trash King bin, and our what not to put in a bin page has the full list.
Need to get rid of a mattress or box spring? It can go in as an add on for an added fee. Mention it when you book.
