An upright piano weighs far more than most people guess, and it is on Surrey's list of items its large item pickup does not accept. If a piano is in your living room or basement, you will need to plan the move.
City pickup says no

Surrey's Large Item Pickup program lists pianos and musical instruments among items it does not accept, and tells residents to check with Metro Vancouver to see where to recycle or donate them. Other city programs have their own lists, so check yours before you book. Our large item pickup guide compares city rules.
Find it a new home
A playable piano can go to someone who wants one. Ask local schools, churches and community music programs whether they are looking for a piano, and expect them to ask about its condition, its age and whether tuning is needed. Metro Vancouver Recycles can help you search for places that take musical instruments.
Moving a piano

A piano is heavy and awkward, and moving one without help risks injury and damage to your floors. If you have to move it, a professional piano mover is the safer choice. Ask whether they handle donations too.
If it cannot be played or donated
An old piano that cannot be repaired still has parts that can be separated. Wood, metal strings and the frame are different materials. If you are thinking of dismantling it yourself, take care. The tension in the strings and the weight of the frame can hurt you. Ask a piano technician before you start.
Where a bin fits
A whole piano usually does not go in our bins. A piano that has been taken apart sometimes can, so call us first for the latest steps. If you have a cleanout around the piano, a 20-yard bin is the common start. See our 20-yard bin page. You handle the loading, and we handle the drop off and the haul away. Putting the bin on your driveway takes no permit. Some cities need a permit for a bin on the street or lane, so confirm with your City before you book. We will line delivery up with any permit dates.
